Canada's Competition Bureau has reached an agreement with Apple and three eBook publishers that'll end allegedly anticompetitive practices. Companies like Amazon will now be able to offer discounts on eBooks from Hachette, Macmillian, and Simon & Schuster.
This case is similar to the one that Apple and publishers faced in the US years ago. It was said to have worked out deals with publishers that led to higher eBook prices as a result of price-fixing. Apple ended up paying $450 million to consumers in the settlement.
An investigation from the Competition Bureau found evidence that Apple made sure eBooks wouldn't be sold for anything less than their iBooks Store price.
