Samsung will release its report on the Note 7 investigation on Sunday evening. Ahead of that report, the Wall Street Journal has provided some details about what Samsung concluded. The company is reportedly blaming "irregularly sized" batteries and manufacturing problems for the phone's issue.
In conducting the investigation, Samsung used three independent "quality-control and supply-chain analysis firms." Together, they identified two causes. The first fault was with units using batteries made by Samsung SDI. Those batteries simply didn't fit properly in the Note 7, leading to overheating.
The second problem was tied to Samsung rushing its manufacturers in order to make sure there was an adequate supply. It appears that rush led to "manufacturing issues."
