China Creating A State-Run Alternative To Wikipedia

Rather than open up access to Wikipedia, China is working on its own state-controlled online encyclopedia. The government blocked Wikipedia around 13 years ago, grouping it in with other sites censored by the country's "Great Firewall."
The Chinese-made alternative is being developed by up to 20,000 people. It's going to be a "Great Wall of culture," according to project editor-in-chief Yang Muzhi. Muzhi is also the chairman of the Book and Periodicals Distribution Association of China.
Thousands of people are involved in the project since China wants there to be over 300,000 entries across 100 disciplines. Each will have around 1000 words.
China is targeting a launch in 2018.
When it goes live, the resource will highlight "China's latest science and technology developments, promote historical heritage, increase cultural soft power, and strengthen the core values of socialism."
