Yahoo admitted in December that over a billion user accounts were compromised in August 2013. The company's lengthy delay in revealing the breach is now being investigated by the SEC. Hackers stole names, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, hashed passwords, and security answers/questions.
The fact that some employees knew about the breach at least as early as 2014 triggered the investigation.
As part of the investigation, the SEC has requested documents from Yahoo pertaining to the hack. It wants to see if the company should have disclosed the problem to investors much sooner.
