Uber has become a more popular mode of transportation than taxis in New York, reports The New York Times. In July, the average number of daily Uber trips reached 289,000, while there were only 277,000 rides in yellow taxi cabs. Uber has improved its performance in the region due to increasing the number of UberBLACK vehicles in the outer boroughs. Those areas are underserved by taxis and public transit.
In 2016, the number of taxi trips in New York declined by 11%, while Uber and its primary competitor Lyft grew.
