A judge in Ohio has come up with an interesting way to deal with some drunk drivers: forcing them to install ridehailing apps like Uber and Lyft. Ohio Municipal Court Judge Michael Cicconetti has been ordering people to install those apps whenever they're convicted of Operating a Vehicle Impaired.
The drivers also have to add their credit card to the apps as part of their probation.
If you can save one person from getting another OVI, one person from getting into an accident, one person from hurting somebody else, it makes sense. It's just common sense. It doesn't cost anybody anything to install it and activate it, and it's far cheaper than paying the thousands of dollars you'd have to pay for another OVI.- Cicconetti
There is some evidence that ridehailing apps have helped reduce drunk driving in certain locations, though it's difficult to draw a firm conclusion. Clearly the judge hopes people will call an Uber or Lyft instead of driving if those apps are available.
