Nintendo won't charge for access to the Switch's online capabilities until next year, when the actual online gaming service launches. For now, online competitive and co-op multiplayer features are free. You'll have to spend $20 per year when the online services arrives in 2018.
The Switch's online service was supposed to go live this year. A "free, limited version" of online lobbies and voice chat will be available sometime this summer, but a full rollout isn't taking place in 2017.
You'll also be able to get online service for $4 per month or $8 for three months.
