Phone searches at the US border appear to be rising dramatically, with the number of searches in February 2017 surpassing all of 2015. NBC News obtained data showing the increase in searches performed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The DHS searched 5,000 devices in 2015, over 25,000 in 2016, and now it seems to be on track to conduct even more searches this year.
If you're traveling, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) recommends locking down your phone as much as possible. You should encrypt your device, use a complicated password, and backup your data in case your device is seized.
