FCC Blocks Rules To Keep ISPs From Secretly Selling Data

The FCC under Ajit Pai has worked to get rid of rules created by the Obama administration that would keep ISPs from secretly selling customer data. Officials with the agency blocked the rules a day before they were set to be enacted.
Pai doesn't believe all of the regulations are "consistent" with the FTC's privacy standards. He's been opposed to their implementation.
The rules were introduced in October 2016 and would have potentially boosted privacy and transparency. ISPs would be compelled to inform users about breaches and would have had a harder time selling data without a user's explicit permission.
This decision not to implement the rules "will maintain a status quo that has been in place for nearly two years with respect to ISPs and nearly a decade with respect to other telecommunications carriers," according to Pai.
New rules will be created by the FCC and FTC.
