China's Didi Chuxing, a local rival to Uber, has opened an AI and autonomous vehicle lab in the United States. Although it's not expanding the availability of its core services, Didi is looking to gain access to more employees.
This US facility is collaborating with another in China. It's led by Dr. Fengmin Gong and Zheng Bu, two security experts.
Gong is primarily in charge of the Mountain View research center. He has a team of "dozens of leading data scientists and researchers.
Charlie Miller, a former researcher for Uber, is joining the lab.
Didi has formed a partnership with Udacity on autonomous vehicles to encourage teams to develop an Automated Safety and Awareness Processing Stack to make driving safer.
