Solar power around the globe received a 50% boost during 2016, with a big part of the rise coming from the US and China, according to SolarPower Europe. There is now a global capacity of 305GW, up from just 50GW in 2010.
2016 saw an increase of 76 gigawatts, which was greater than the 50GW added in the preceding year. The US and China both doubled their solar growth compared to 2015.
In order to meet the Paris [climate agreement] targets, it would be important if solar could continue its rapid growth. The global solar industry is ready to do that, and can even speed up. - James Watson, SolarPower Europe
