Australia has decided Uber will be treated as a taxi service in the country. Uber had argued it's not a taxi service since drivers aren't considered employees and aren't like regular taxi drivers, but an Australian court struck down that argument.
Uber initially appealed a ruling by the Australian Taxation Office in 2015 that mandated drivers pay the goods and services tax (GST). That decision basically turned them into "taxi drivers" and Uber into a "taxi service."
The Australian Federal Court didn't agree with Uber's talking points, leading to its reclassification. Drivers will have to register for the GST and pay the 10% tax.
Uber hasn't said if it'll attempt appealing further.
