Netflix and a group of other companies are facing lawsuits from Blackbird Technologies, a patent troll, over their offline download features. Lawsuits have been filed against Netflix, Soundcloud, Vimeo, Starz, Mubi, and Studio 3 Partners.
According to Blackbird, those companies are infringing upon a patent that covers "methods and systems of digital data duplication." That patent has been used in the past to win multiple court cases, so it's possible Netflix may settle.
Blackbird is a classic patent troll. It's only business involves buying patent rights and using those patents to sue larger companies.
