104 satellites were launched by a single Indian rocket Tuesday night, setting a new record. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) used its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle to send all of the satellites to space.
The launch took place about 1,000 miles south of New Delhi. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi referred to the successful mission as "another proud moment for our historic space scientific community and the nation."
Russia previously held the record after sending 37 satellites to orbit in 2014.
Among the 104 in this mission were a Cartosat-2 Earth observation satellite, 88 "Dove" satellites from earth-imaging company Planet, and 14 nanosatellites from around the world.
