Ford and Toyota have founded the SmartDeviceLink (SDL) Consortium to help third-parties create apps for vehicles. Other automakers including Mazda, Suzuki, and PSA Group are joining the consortium. The group will remain neutral as to how SmartDeviceLink, a technology created by Ford, is used. SDL was open-sourced by the company.
Code from the SDL Consortium will be posted to GitHub and anybody can propose changes. With a more standardized in-car app platform, developers can create software that's capable of running on a large selection of vehicles.
Each car company has control over which apps are integrated and what their interface is like.
Some new features for SDL are in the works, including voice passthrough, improved wireless projection, and further integration with mobile navigation services.
