Amazon is said to be working on a food delivery service that'll specialize in meals that don't require refrigeration, making them easier to ship and less costly. Reuters claims the company is interested in using microwave assisted thermal sterilization (MATS), a military technology.
The meals will be sterilized using food packets placed in pressurized water that are then heated with a microwave. Compared to the meals usually created by a similar pressure-cooker-based system, the MAST meals have more taste.
Without ever being refrigerated, they can last up to a year. We could see these products by next year.
