Facebook's Fake News Tools Will First Go Live In Germany

Facebook's new tools intended to combat the spread of fake news will first roll out in Germany. The fake news identification tools were unveiled in late 2016 and have been tested in the US. Aine Kerr, Facebook's manager of journalism partnerships, says the roll out will occur in the next few weeks.
Facebook will use a combination of algorithms, user reports, and third-party fact-checking groups to reduce the impact of fake news. Stories generally won't be removed from the network, but their visibility can be limited. Facebook will also alert users to the fact that they may be viewing fake content.
One of the company's German partners is Correctiv, an investigative journalism non-profit. Correctiv is initially focused on fake news pertaining to elections in the country. A team of 25 employees will review content uploaded by users and popular stories that spread "propaganda lies."
