Amazon Requests FCC Permission For Secret Wireless Tests

An application to run tests on multiple wireless frequency bands was filed by Amazon with the FCC last week. The company wants to receive permission in the form of a "five-month experimental special temporary authority to operate on selected" frequencies.
Amazon says it'll test equipment and software "designed to support innovative communications capabilities and functionalities." The testing is set to occur in Seattle and Kennewick, Washington. Each location will get three fixed low-power transmitters and wireless units.
While the official information about the tests is vague, it's possible the trial deals with the company's delivery drones. This is supported by the inclusion of Neil Woodward as a contact on the filing. Woodward formerly worked at NASA and is Amazon Prime Air's senior manager for flight test and certification.
