App Downloads Increased 15%, Revenue Increased 40% Last Year

The mobile app market saw a significant increase in downloads and revenue during 2016. App Annie reports worldwide downloads were up 15% year-over-year and revenue paid to developers jumped 40%. A lot of the increase can be tied to activity in China.
Regular apps were more responsible for the rise in downloads than games. Some of the top categories on iOS were finance, travel, and photo/video. Google Play's top categories included productivity, tools, and social.
App Annie also reports there was a large increase in time spent using apps. That figure was up by 150 billion hours on Android alone, meaning users spent a collective 900 billion hours in Android apps last year.
