Ransomware traditionally locks your computer until a ransom is paid, hence the name of the malware. But a new piece of ransomware has appeared that lets users unlock their files by infecting others. If you don't spread it, the ransom is set at 1 Bitcoin, about $780.
This piece of malware is known as Popcorn Time. It locks your files with AES-256 encryption unless you pay up or successfully spread the malware to two other people. You'll only receive a free decryption key if the other users actually become infected.
Whoever is behind Popcorn Time claims to be from Syria and says the ransom money "will be used for food, medicine, and shelter to those in need."
Infected users have seven days to spread the malware or pay the ransom before their files will be permanently encrypted.
