Intel is rolling out brand new patches for the Spectre security flaw. The patches cover the company’s Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake and Skylake processors. It will also cater to the sixth, seventh and eighth generation Intel Core processor, along with the Intel X-series CPUs. The Intel Xeon Scalable and Xeon D processors will also be protected, meaning datacenters can breathe a sigh of relief. That is, as long as there are no new issues found.
“Based on these efforts, we have now released production microcode updates to our OEM customers and partners for Kaby Lake- and Coffee Lake-based platforms, plus additional Skylake-based platforms. This represents our 6th, 7th and 8th Generation Intel® Core™ product lines as well as our latest Intel® Core™ X-series processor family. It also includes our recently announced Intel® Xeon® Scalable and Intel® Xeon® D processors for data center systems,” wrote Navin Shenoy, executive VP and GM of Intel’s data center group.
The updates will come to you through OEM firmware updates and Intel would hope that things go fine this time. The company had earlier patches its platforms against the Spectre leak, though the company faced troubles there. Intel had to warn users against installing the updates, since it was leading to PCs rebooting randomly. Intel told users to stop installing the updates till it could do better.
It took Intel two months to come up with this update though, so users would want things to go fine this time. The Spectre flaw was revealed some time ago, sending users and businesses scurrying for protection.
