The Boring Company, one of Elon Musk's ventures, is working on a 10-mile tunnel in Maryland that could one day form part of the basis for an underground Hyperloop. Pete Rahn, Maryland's Transportation Secretary, says the company wants to dig two 35-mile tunnels connecting Baltimore and Washington DC.
Two-thirds of the land required for the overall project is owned by the federal government. It's not clear if The Boring Company has permission for the entire project, but we do know it can dig a 10-mile tunnel due to approval from the state government.
Musk said this summer that he received verbal approval for an underground Hyperloop that'd connect New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and DC.
