Roku Could Be Shifting Away From Hardware, Wants To Do More Software

Roku is predominantly a streaming device company, yet it could be planning a shift away from its near-exclusive focus on hardware. Variety says the company wants to begin streaming video from its existing application for mobile devices. Right now that app is essentially just a remote for Roku devices.
Offering to stream through the app would give people a way to watch videos without any extra hardware, essentially making Roku a competitor of sorts to other streaming services.
At the core of the app might be the recently introduced Roku Channel, which offers movies in an ad-supported manner. Roku signed distribution deals with Lionsgate, Sony, Warner Bros, and others.
Third-party channels could also be added to the application to give people a larger content selection.
