The New York Times started offering free Google Home units to new digital subscribers yesterday, but it made a big mistake with the promotion. For a while, consumers were able to spend just $17 on their subscription and get a Home unit. The NYT was letting people cancel right away instead of making them enter a binding year-long agreement.
All of the Home units available for the promotion (at least for now) sold out in under 10 hours.
The NYT eventually changed the language on the promo so that it was clear people would need to have a full year-long subscription.
