Next-Gen Flash Storage To Bring Massive Performance Increase

Chipset manufacturers have brought big performance improvements over the last few years, but other segments have not improved that much, especially when talking about batteries. Storage chips have also been improving, with smartphone makers using the UFS 2.0 and UFS 2.1 storage chips in their flagship models.
The good news is that those chips could end up in mid-range chipsets as a new version is on the horizon. The new UFS 3.0 is expected to offer speeds up to 2.4 GB/s, up from the 1.2 GB/s theoretical limit of UFS 2.1. The UFS 3.0 intellectual property licensing has allegedly begun and Taiwanese electronics company Phison has begun working on a UFS 3.0 controller, meaning the expected 2018 launch is going to happen.
