Lenovo Has To Pay $3.5 Million For Superfish Adware

Back in 2014, Lenovo got themselves in hot water when they started bundling a third-party adware program called "Superfish". All computers between September 2014 and January 2015 were shipping with the software and because of that, Lenovo is now facing the consequences.
Today, Lenovo settled a lawsuit by the Federal Trade Commission (FCC) and will have to pay $3.5 million in penalties. It will also have to inform its customers of all the software that comes pre-loaded on its products and receive the user's consent, and will be subject to 20 years of audited security checks.
"This case sends a very important message that everybody in the chain needs to pay attention. If you are going to preinstall this kind of software, you need to pay attention to what you're collecting and what you're telling consumers," said FTC chairman Maureen Ohlhausen.
