During the 2016 presidential race in the United States, Facebook sold $100,000 in political ads to Russian-linked accounts. The social media company admitted it sold the ads to accounts and pages that "likely operated out of Russia," indicating the network's ads were used to impact the election on Russia's behalf.
Some of the ads directly dealt with the election, though the majority covered election-related issues like gun rights.
The $100,000 in advertising discussed by Facebook covered 3,000 separate ads associated with 470 accounts. The accounts and pages that purchased them have since been closed by Facebook for inauthenticity and terms violations.
