Those responsible for the WannaCry ransomware attack have finally collected their ransom earnings. It appears the hackers withdrew 52.2 Bitcoins during the night. Those have a value of $143,000 and they came from victims affected by the ransomware who decided to pay up rather than lose access to their data.
Elliptic, a startup that works with law enforcement to track cybercriminals, confirmed the withdrawal. Tom Robinson, co-founder of Elliptic, thinks the hackers could be trying to convert the funds into another cryptocurrency.
We believe some of these funds are being converted into Monero, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency. We continue to work with law enforcement to support their efforts in tracing ownership of these funds.- Robinson
