Tesla has won a contract to set up the world's largest battery storage facility, which will be used to assist a wind farm in Australia. It'll serve the Hornsdale Wind Farm and be operational around December of this year. With access to a large energy storage facility, the utility providers can ensure consistent access to wind-generated power.
When the batteries are at max capacity, 30,000 homes could be serviced. The facility will use Tesla's Powerpack devices to offer a 100 MW/129 MWh capacity.
Energy storage of this sort helps to stabilize Australia's wind-based energy availability. The batteries fill up during peak energy capture periods and become a source of power during other times.
