Evidence suggests the Petya malware attack came from a state actor, which could make it an act of war, according to NATO. Researchers with the international organization found the malware "can most likely be attributed to a state actor." If that ends up being further supported, "this could be an internationally wrongful act, which might give the targeted states several options to respond with countermeasures."
The countermeasures that'd be undertaken aren't entirely clear.
Other officials, such as the UK's defense secretary, have also taken a hard stance against Petya. The secretary said the UK is willing to respond to cyberattacks like Petya "from any domain - air, land, sea or cyber."
Although we're still learning more about Petya, some people believe it came from the Russian government and was primarily meant to attack Ukraine.
