Twitter has implemented a filter in the direct messages section that'll place messages from strangers in a different section by default. If you're using the "receive messages from anyone" feature, you'll see messages from people you don't follow in a new tab.
Those messages are going to show up as "requests," similar to the way Facebook Messenger handles conversations from people you aren't friends with.
You can either Accept or Delete a requested conversation. You won't be able to see pictures, GIFs, or media from the messages unless you accept the conversation.
This change is rolling out slowly.
