Symantec Has Defended Against 21 Million WannaCrypt Attacks

Computer security company Symantec has protected computers from nearly 22 million instances of WannaCrypt, a piece of ransomware that's been spreading over the past week. Symantec says it "blocked nearly 22 million WannaCry infection attempts across 300,000 endpoints, providing full protection for Symantec customers through its advanced exploit protection technology."
The attack involves encrypting a computer's files and demanding around $300 in ransom. Although that's not a particularly high ransom, enough people giving in to the demand could lead to a lot of money for the attackers.
Recent reports suggest there could be a link between the ransomware and the North Korea government.
Unpatched Windows computers have been affected by WannaCrypt, but those with sufficient security software can be still be defended.
Our proactive network protection and advanced machine learning technologies provided real-time, zero-day, protection for all SEP and Norton customers when WannaCry was released last week.- Mike Fey, president, Symantec
