Hackers Use Subtitles To Spread Malware

Subtitle files that are often downloaded by people with pirated movies/shows are being used by hackers to hide malware. Checkpoint reports the exploit has given hackers a way to control someone's desktop by getting them to load fake movie subtitles.
This impacts people using video players like VLC and Popcorn Time.
Typically these files are trusted by users and video player software, so they offer an exploitable vulnerability in people's security.
Once you open the subtitles with your preferred player, the cyberattack is delivered via the file.
Patches should be delivered for most players and you can get an update for Popcorn Time here.
