Facebook is updating Messenger with a couple new features: Mentions and Reactions. They're available in group chats and they let people respond to messages with emoji and reach out to individual people with an "@" symbol.
Unlike on Facebook, Messenger has a thumbs down option in addition to other reactions. The existence of these options gives people an alternative way to respond to someone's comment without having to type out a response.
The mentions feature will also be quite useful as a way to ping someone in order to pull them back into a chat.
