Version 57 of Google Chrome for desktop comes with a feature that'll throttle background tabs to reduce the strain on a computer. Chrome is known for being a resource-intensive piece of software when a lot of tabs are open.
Writing on the Chromium blog, Google explains background tabs account for one-third of Chrome's power usage.
Tabs will be throttled as long as they're not the source of actively playing audio. Therefore playing a video in the background, for example, isn't going to be affected by the update.
A page visibility API will check tabs after 10 seconds of being in the background. It'll throttle them if audio isn't detected and if the tabs aren't maintaining WebSockets or WebRTC connections.
