Uber Starts Mapping Roads In Asia, Beginning With Singapore

A large mapping project at Uber has expanded to Asia, starting with Singapore. The company is sending out mapping vehicles to collect data that'll ultimately improve its service for Uber and its customers. Compared to the data that's currently available from other sources, Uber says it needs data about things like "traffic patterns and precise pick-up and drop-off locations."
Local mapping is necessary to acquire that kind of information.
We need to be able to provide a seamless experience in parts of the world where there aren't detailed maps — or street signs.- Uber
Uber has also used mapping vehicles in the US, UK, Australia, Mexico, Canada, and South Africa.
It hasn't said which other Asian countries will be mapped following Singapore.
