Google Ordered To Hand Over Foreign Emails, Breaking Precedent From Microsoft Case

A judge in Philadelphia has ordered Google to provide the FBI with emails stored on a foreign server. That decision breaks from precedent that was set in a case involving Microsoft's services. Microsoft successfully argued that foreign data is beyond the reach of US authorities.
The ruling states Google must transfer the messages to the US. That action doesn't cause any "meaningful" damage to the email account holder's "possessory interest" in the data, according to the judge.
Google cited Microsoft's victory while arguing its case. It isn't pleased with the court's decision and it plans to appeal, which could certainly be successful given the rulings in Microsoft's case.
