NPD Says 2016 Game Industry Had $30.4 Billion In Revenue

The video game industry saw $30.4 billion in revenue during 2016, up $200 million from 2015, reports NPD Group. That figure covers the amount spent on hardware, software, peripherals, and in-game purchases. NPD reported a 6% increase in software sales, while hardware sales were down 24%.
A decline in total unit sales and some price reductions led to consoles contributing less revenue than in 2015. There was a 15% lower combined average retail price for the Xbox One and PS4, along with a 7% drop in unit sales.
The Nintendo 3DS stood out from other platforms with a 4% increase in sales.
