FTC Files A Lawsuit Against Qualcomm For Anticompetitive Behaviour

The United States Federal Trade Commission today filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm, accusing the company of using unfair anti-competitive tactics in order to gain advantage from its competitors. According to the FTC, Qualcomm has a "no license, no chips" policy, which forces companies to agree to its preferred licensing terms before it will sell them any baseband processors.
The regulators also claim that the chip maker forced an exclusive deal with Apple that would make Qualcomm the exclusive supplier of certain baseband chips from 2011 until 2016, preventing the iPhone maker from using other baseband processors. Qualcomm denied those allegations.
"(Qualcomm) never withheld or threatened to withhold chip supply in order to obtain agreement to unfair or unreasonable licensing terms. The FTC's allegation to the contrary — the central thesis of the complaint — is wrong."-Qualcomm
