China To Build First Exascale Supercomputer Prototype This Year

China wants to maintain its lead in the global race for the most powerful supercomputer. It's currently home to the top supercomputer, the Sunway TaihuLight, which was unveiled in 2016. But it's focused on reaching beyond that system to build an exascale computer.
The system will take the supercomputer race beyond the "peta" prefix, which equates to quadrillions of calculations per second. "Exa" is for a quintillion calculations.
Zhang Ting, an engineer with the National Supercomputer Center, says China's prototype will be ready this year. A finalized version is expected to be available by 2020.
[It] will be 200 times more powerful than the country's first petaflop computer Tianhe-1, recognized as the world's fastest in 2010.- Ting
