China Declares All VPNs Illegal

VPNs that are not specifically authorized by the Chinese government are now considered illegal. In a move to expand the country's "Great Firewall," China has launched a 14-month campaign to "clean up" the country's internet connections.
Part of that campaign is focused on getting rid of all unauthorized VPN use. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's declaration means most people using VPN software are breaking the law.

This crackdown on secure connections is allegedly meant to "strengthen cyberspace information security management."
Many top sites are blocked by the Great Firewall and people have relied on VPNs for years to get around the blocks.
