Valve has received a $3 million fine in Australia due to it generally not offering refunds in compliance with the country's regulations. The Federal Court found Steam was in violation of Australian Consumer Laws. Valve is getting the maximum fine requested by the competition regulator.
Karl Quackenbuch, Valve's legal counsel, explained that the company didn't carefully examine Australia's laws when bringing Steam to the market.
Steam must now make sure it is in compliance and it must tell consumers about their rights, which include receiving refunds in a larger number of cases.
Valve suggested it only pay $250,000.
