UN Agrees To Formally Discuss Legality Of Autonomous Weapons

The UN is taking action on autonomous weapons before they have a chance to influence the battlefield. It has agreed to formally discuss their legality and place in warfare over a period of two weeks at the 2017 UN convention in Geneva. The talks will include discussion about a potential ban on lethal autonomous weapons.
At least 88 countries are set to attend, with the talks beginning in April or August. 19 countries currently support a complete ban on autonomous weapons when they're capable of killing humans.
Many researchers hope weapons systems will be allowed to progress, but that the decision to actually kill a human will remain with other humans.
Nine members of the US Congress wrote a letter earlier this week supporting a ban on autonomous weapons systems.
