Uber is outright opposed to applying for an autonomous vehicle permit in California, arguing it's simply unnecessary. It clarified in a press conference that it won't give in to the California DMV's primary demand. Uber is defiant since it believes the DMV has misinterpreted "existing regulations."
The ridesharing service, which began using autonomous vehicles in San Francisco this month, believes its cars are similar to Tesla's AutoPilot. Though, AutoPilot is currently limited to highway driving.
Complying with the DMV's demand would cost the company $100 per vehicle.
Uber wants there to be a change in California's law that adds a "clear description of when a vehicle goes from not-autonomous to autonomous."
