Supercharger access is included for free with all existing Tesla vehicles, but the company says it's rolling out a small fee that'll apply to those who hog up charging stations. Once you remain at a station for over five minutes after your car is charged, you'll face a $0.40 per minute fee.
Tesla says it's frustrating for other drivers when they arrive at a Supercharger location and see fully-charged vehicles filling up the spots. Implementing a fee will hopefully lead to people moving on faster.
A customer would never leave a car parked by the pump at a gas station and the same thinking applies with Superchargers. We understand that it can be frustrating to arrive at a station only to discover fully charged Tesla cars occupying all the spots.- Tesla
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, says this system will be updated so that the fees only apply when most of the other charging spots are filled up.
@TeslaMotors We are going to modify this so that people only pay a fee if most bays are occupied. If the site is basically deserted, no problem to park.
Beginning next year, free Supercharger access will no longer be included with new vehicle purchases.
