Russia allegedly managed to track the activities of Ukrainian military personnel with a piece of Android malware called Fancy Bear. CrowdStrike reports the malware was included in normally legitimate software pertaining to artillery targeting missions.
Fancy Bear could access a phone's communications, general location data, and contacts.
A tool such as this has the potential ability to map out a unit's composition and hierarchy, determine their plans, and even triangulate their approximate location. This type of strategic analysis can enable the identification of zones in which troops are operating and help prioritize assets within those zones for future targeting.- CrowdStrike
The app was distributed to members of the military between 2014 and 2016. This is only one of multiple instances where the Russian government may have engaged in cyberwarfare against Ukrainian forces.
