Google's practice of scanning Gmail email content has been challenged in a lawsuit filed with the Northern California District Court. Rather than fight the lawsuit in defense of Gmail, Google has put forth a voluntary proposed settlement that would slightly tweak the scanning.
While Gmail would continue scanning emails before they reach a user's inbox in order to combat spam and viruses, ad-related scanning will be delayed until an email is received. This change makes little difference to user privacy, but it could be sufficient to deal with the lawsuit.
If the proposed settlement is accepted, Google may still pay $2.2 million.
