First Solar Panel Road Opens In France

The first solar panel road in the world is now operational in France. It spans 1 kilometer in Tourouvre-au-Perche, a small village in Normandy. The solar panels should be able to generate enough electricity to power the village's street lights, which isn't a whole lot considering the project cost $5.2 million.
Even though solar panel roads aren't terribly efficient, French ecology minister Segolene Royal wants 1,000 kilometers of highway to be covered in panels.
30,000 square feet of solar panels are present just along the initial kilometer. This implementation is being treated as a test of the technology.
