First Offshore Wind Farm In US Turns On

The first offshore wind farm in the United States is now functional. Deepwater Wind's setup is located off Block Island, an island that's part of Rhode Island. It has a capacity of 30 megawatts from five turbines and should cover 90% of the energy need for the island.
Extra energy generated by the wind farm will be sent to the rest of Rhode Island using a National Grid sea2shore cable system.
Our success here is a testament to the hard work of hundreds of local workers who helped build this historic project, and to the Block Islanders and the thousands more around the U.S. who've supported us every step of the way of this amazing journey,- Jeffrey Grybowski, CEO, Deepwater Wind
Deepwater Wind began working on the setup two years ago and testing began earlier this year. Testing is now complete and the wind farm is delivering energy to the grid.
