In its first big announcement since the IPO, Spotify today announced a full revamp of its application. With the new app, the company is also changing its free subscription tier, offering 15 playlists to users. Spotify says this would constitute for about 750 tracks and over 40 hours of music playback.
What’s most useful though is that users will be able to skip tracks, play them again and again and choose single tracks to play. This is something that the company didn’t allow so far, and will likely make the platform more sticky for users. That is Spotify’s final goal. In fact, the company said the freemium model is important to how it does business.

The free playlists include Discover Weekly, Release Radar and the Daily Mix playlists that Spotify creates. All of these have been widely appreciated by users. The app will also suggest tracks when you’re creating playlists on Spotify now.
One of the most significant changes to the application is the navigation located at the bottom as compared to the old version that had five tabs: Home, Browse, Search, Radio, and Your Library. According to the company, there are already over two billion user created playlists on the app right now.
In addition, Spotify is also adding a data saver mode for slower connections, which should allow music to stream without pauses when you’re on slow data networks
